Autumn Pet Safety Tips
Autumn is here, and the sudden temperature change can significantly affect your pets. This is the time when dogs are prone to illnesses and other dangers lurking in the corner. During this time, you need to be more vigilant of your dog’s health and safety.
We have some safety tips for you to keep your pets happy and healthy during the autumn months.
Be cautious of poisons.
During autumn, rats wander anywhere, and we tend to put poisons in places where they tend to stay. These are also places where our pets would often lurk around and play. To combat rodents, we often use rodenticides, and these are poisonous and highly toxic to pets. If accidentally ingested, it can be fatal to pets. When using these kinds of products, we need to use them with extreme caution and, if possible, put them in places that are not easily accessible to pets.
Rodenticides and insecticides are not the only things that are fatal for pets. If you have a car and decide to change your car’s engine coolant, these are also highly toxic, especially animals. Spills should be avoided and cleaned so that pets will not get poisoned.
Pets get sick with the flu.
With the sudden temperature change from summer to fall, pets are likely to get sick with the flu. This flu is known as the canine flu, and along with it is bordetella or known as kennel cough. Both are airborne diseases. If you see a dog coughing, keep your dog away from it, and you should not touch the dog either. Kennel cough is a highly contagious disease for dogs, and it can cause dry cough, fever, loss of appetite, severe pneumonia, and even death. Upon seeing a dog that is coughing, try to keep your dog away to avoid contact.
Keep school supplies out of reach.
Now that summer is over and kids are going back to school. There will be pencils, markers, and glue sticks lying around, and dogs love chewing on things that are new to them. Some school supplies are toxic when ingested by pets, so you have to be careful where kids put them. Ingested school supplies can cause gastrointestinal upset or blockages, and these are some of the top reasons for cats and dogs to ask for untimely help from a vet.
Mushrooms are everywhere.
Now that fall has begun, mushrooms are sprouting. Some mushrooms are edible and nontoxic, but wild mushrooms can be toxic, especially to pets. Ingesting poisonous mushrooms can be fatal to pets and pose a life-threatening problem. Poisonous mushrooms are pretty difficult to distinguish from nontoxic ones. If you can clear the wild, poisonous mushrooms, it will be safer for pets, but it is safer to keep pets away from areas where mushrooms grow.
Wildlife dangers.
During the fall season, some of the animals in the wildlife are preparing to hibernate like snakes. They tend to be grumpy when it is time for them to hibernate. Thus, they become more aggressive. As a fur parent, you need to know what kind of wildlife is present in your neighborhood. Try to keep your pets away from these areas and if snakes accidentally bite them, go to the vet clinic immediately.
Keep them allergy-free.
Some animals have seasonal allergies like humans. Have your pets checked if they have allergies and visit the vet immediately for proper testing and medications.
Keep them away from holiday stress.
During the fall season, we have a lot of holidays to celebrate. Holiday stress is not only for humans but also for our pets. When you find your pets are showing signs of stress, give them something to chew to keep them distracted. If they are still distracted, give them a quiet room to stay, especially for cats who like to spend most of their time alone.
Keeping your pets healthy and happy is your primary goal as a fur parent. As the fall season starts, it is better to keep homes free of any dangers lurking anywhere to keep them safe from unexpected accidents and wildlife attacks. Being aware of their Allergies also helps to keep them healthy and away from veterinary visits.
