How to Help Your Pet Conquer the Vet!
Vet, the worst word your pets will want to hear. Have you ever noticed that when you say the word “vet” to your pets, they will scramble like crazy? Animals have feelings, and they also feel traumas if they have had bad experiences, especially with vets.
Trying to send your pet to the vet becomes a struggle for you and your pet. But they need to have regular checkups to prevent them from getting sick and keep them healthy. There are different ways you can help conquer your pet’s fear of the vet.
Seatbelt harness for your dogs.
Some dogs are not comfortable inside a kennel, and it can even make them more stressed if you try to cage them while traveling to the vet clinic. Your choice is to have them sit with you inside the car and use a seatbelt harness. Using this will make them feel safe and prevent them from jumping out of the window.
Use a carrier for your cats.
Cats can be aggressive, especially when traveling. It is best to use a carrier when traveling to the vet. Containing them will prevent them from scratching you and biting you. It also makes them feel safer and avoid getting stuck under car seats while they try to hide. Covering the opening where they will not see strangers also helps and keeps them from stressing out.
Get your pets used to the carrier days before the appointment.
If you are traveling with a pet inside a carrier, make them get used to seeing it and smelling it. Pets who are used to things and commonly see it will not suspect anything or feel stressed when you try to put them inside. They need to be familiar with the carrier so that they will not hesitate to come inside when they need to.
Use a catnip when traveling.
It may be a mystery to some about how potent catnip is for cats. When traveling with an uneasy pet cat to the vet, try to give them a catnip. Catnips are effective in calming cats. Instead of them feeling unsafe and overwhelmed by the vet experience, they may feel more relaxed.
Take your dog for a ride.
Some dogs are used to traveling, and they enjoy car rides. But if your dog is not yet familiar with traveling by car, it is best to take them for a short ride to get acquainted with the car ride and the different places they will see while traveling.
Make a make-shift stretcher when transporting injured pets.
Sometimes we need to send our pets to the vet because of unexpected injuries. Wrap your pets in a blanket to lessen the jostling that can cause more pain to your sick pet. Have someone or two if the pet is significant to hold them while you drive to the vet.
Keep the noise down.
Pets sometimes have reactions to noises, especially with cars. Keeping the noise down will help your pets to calm down when you try to transport them.
Put your pets on a leash.
A leash is essential for pets, especially dogs. You wouldn’t want your pet to roam around the vet clinic and cause trouble. Always use a leash when you visit the vet. Having a leash will help you control where your pet goes.
Cats and dogs alike are not fond of vet visits. Some love the car ride but would react differently when they are inside the vet clinic. Disciplining your pet will also help lessen your stress and your pet’s stress in the vet clinic.
