Pet Wellness Exams and Checkups in Deerfield Beach

Pet wellness exam at MVS Animal Clinic in Deerfield Beach

The best time to see your veterinarian is before something is wrong. A regular pet wellness exam gives us the chance to catch small problems early, keep your pet protected against preventable diseases and make sure they’re living their healthiest, most comfortable life. At our animal hospital in Deerfield Beach, Dr. Deborah Niedermiller has been providing preventive care to pets across Broward County since 1982. Every exam is personal, unhurried and tailored to your pet.

What a Comprehensive Wellness Exam Covers

A wellness exam is a nose-to-tail checkup for a pet who seems healthy. We take the time to look at every part of your pet’s health and listen to anything you’ve noticed at home. A typical exam includes:

Weight and vital signs

We check your pet’s weight, temperature, heart rate and breathing, and track changes from visit to visit. Small shifts in weight are often the first sign that something has changed.

Eyes, ears, nose and mouth

We look for infection, irritation, discharge and early signs of dental disease, including tartar buildup and gum inflammation.

Abdomen, joints and muscles

Gentle hands-on checks help us spot pain, swelling, stiffness or changes in the internal organs.

Vaccination review

Dr. Niedermiller selects your pet’s vaccines based on their individual lifestyle and risk factors, rather than giving the same set to every pet.

Heart and lungs

Listening with a stethoscope helps us pick up murmurs, irregular rhythms or breathing changes.

Skin and coat

We check for lumps, rashes, hair loss, fleas and ticks.

Parasite prevention

We’ll talk about flea, tick and heartworm prevention that fits your pet and your household.

Nutrition and behavior

We’ll answer your questions about diet, activity, behavior changes or anything else on your mind. Sudden changes in behavior, like chewing or restlessness, can be a reason for a veterinary checkup.

At the end of the visit, we’ll walk you through what we found and what, if anything, we recommend next.

How Often Should Your Pet
Have a Wellness Exam?

Pets age much faster than we do, so a year between visits is a long time in your pet’s life. We recommend a wellness exam every six months, or at least once a year, in line with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) preventive care guidance. How often your pet needs to be seen depends on their life stage:

Puppies and kittens (up to about 1 year). Young pets need several visits in their first months for their initial vaccine series, deworming, growth checks and advice on training, nutrition and spay/neuter timing.

Adult pets (about 1 to 7 years). Healthy adult dogs and cats should have a full wellness exam at least once a year, and ideally every six months. These visits keep vaccines and parasite prevention up to date and create a baseline for your pet’s health.

Senior pets (about 7 years and older). As pets get older, conditions like arthritis, kidney disease, thyroid problems and dental disease become more common. We recommend senior pets be seen every six months so we can catch changes early and keep them comfortable. Large-breed dogs may be considered seniors earlier

Lab Work & Diagnostics

Some health problems can’t be seen or felt during a physical exam. Routine lab work gives us a look inside your pet’s body and is especially valuable for senior pets and pets on long-term medication. Depending on your pet’s age and health, Dr. Niedermiller may recommend:

  • Bloodwork, such as a complete blood count and chemistry panel, to check organ function and screen for infection, anemia and diabetes]
  • Urinalysis to check kidney health and look for infection]
  • Fecal testing to screen for intestinal parasites]
  • Heartworm testing for dogs]

Individualized Vaccines & Preventive Care

Vaccines are one of the most important parts of your pet’s wellness visit, but more isn’t always better. Rather than giving every pet the same set of shots, Dr. Niedermiller selects your pet’s vaccines based on their age, health, lifestyle and risk factors. An indoor cat, for example, has very different needs than a dog who visits parks, beaches and boarding facilities around Broward County. At each visit we’ll review which vaccines your pet actually needs, along with flea, tick and heartworm prevention that fits your household. Our in-house pharmacy stocks preventatives and prescription diets, so you can leave with everything your pet needs.
